Lightning is believed to have been the cause of two bushfires in the Yarra Ranges National Park.
Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) firefighters responded to a bushfire at Poley Road near Warburton on Tuesday 4 February and another one east of Reefton on Wednesday 5 February.
An FFMVic spokesperson said worked hard to contain the fire at Poley Road near Warburton to under 0.3 hectares.
“Fourteen firefighters had the fire under control by 11pm on Tuesday 5 February and morning crews worked to consolidate the control line with dozer patrol and blacking out,” they said.
“The fire is believed to have been caused by lightning strikes.”
At the time of writing on Wednesday 5 February, the fire near Reefton had not yet been contained.
The FFMVic spokesperson said at 11.30am on Wednesday 5 February 2025, fire reconnaissance aircraft identified a fire likely caused by lightning deep within the Upper Yarra Catchment, east of Reefton.
“Over 20 Forest Fire Management Victoria firefighters were deployed to the fire, along with three aircraft and three dozers,” they said.
“The aircraft are being used to reduce the spread and intensity of the fire, and the dozers and firefighters will build mineral earth breaks to contain it.”
