Chum Creek greyhound trainer Garry Johnson, who prepares a small team of racers, had his most successful day as a trainer on Sunday 14 July at the Don Road track.
Not only did Garry prepare the winner of the GRV Vic Bred Series Final, but he trained a winning double.
His first winner was the well-credentialed Ryder Sir in race two.
He had recently been racing at Sale and Warragul but returned to his home track and, drawn in the coveted red box, drove to the line to win convincingly giving Garry a good start to the day.
Montey Jack was facing the starter in the GRV Vic Bred final, which offered $4000 to the winner.
Beginning well, he avoided any interference and was very strong and pulled away from the other finalists to cross the line 2.25 lengths clear of Secret Package with Burning Express a further margin away in third.
Even the cold, dismal weather couldn’t wipe the smile off Garry’s face.
Another feature event on the program on Sunday was the 2019 Winter Cup.
This event was won by Dyna Hunter, trained by Steven Collins at Pearcedale.
He has shown a distinct liking for running up the straight in recent weeks and earned $5000 for his gallant effort along with a beautiful cup.
In exciting news Healesville Greyhound Association, the club is now moving towards its National Sprint Championship event that will shine the spotlight on straight track racing across Australia.
The grand final of this event carries a $35,000 winner’s purse and Healesville Greyhound Association is very honoured to be holding the inaugural running of the event.
