Local member for Eildon Cindy McLeish MP has directly called on the Minister for Roads in Parliament to finally commit to funding to install electronic variable speed signs outside Wesburn Primary School.
Ms McLeish has been calling for the instalment of electronic variable speed signs at this location on the Warburton Highway since 2016.
The need for improved pedestrian safety past the school remains a high priority in the area. Speaking in Parliament Ms McLeish said there was a urgent need for the signs.
“This has been a long journey for the school, who desperately want these signs.”
“The Allan Labor Government has a chance to improve school safety as part of the safe system pedestrian infrastructure program. The solution is right in front of them, they just need to jump on board.”
Wesburn Primary School wasn’t selected for the $6.5 million pedestrian and safer schools regional fund in 2021.
Electronic speed limit signs remain a necessity in this location as the Warburton Highway is a busy road with heavy traffic flow through the area.
Fog regularly covers the road and obscures drivers’ vision, adding to the safety risk.
Electronic speed signs would remind drivers to slow down, check their speed and be aware of surrounding school students.
“It is not fair that the students, staff and families should continue to miss out when the installation of these speed signs is so crucial to their safety,” Ms McLeish said.
Under Parliamentary guidelines the Minister has 30 days to respond to Ms McLeish’s request.
