A community garden has gone from strength to strength after it received new rainwater tanks through the Yarra Valley Water’s Community Grants Program.
The two new rainwater tanks ensured Edible Warburton’s community garden can thrive even in the absence of community support as it isn’t connected to a water mains.
Edible Warburton secretary Jennie de Vine welcomed the new installation.
“It has been an absolute blessing to have them there,” said Edible Warburton Secretary Jennie de Vine.
“They will make a huge difference to us as they will help us be self-sufficient in the years to come, and will be particularly useful during the hotter, drier months when we really need water to keep the plants alive.
Open to everyone, Edible Warburton invites locals and visitors alike to help tend to the garden or take produce from it as they please.
Beyond growing food, the garden plays an important social role, holding educational workshops, working bees and school holiday activities that bring the community together.
The stored rainwater will also help the community garden volunteers wash their tools after working on the garden.
Yarra Valley Water acting general manager strategy and community Rob Fittock said he was pleased to be able to support the garden.
“Edible Warburton is about so much more than growing food,” he said.
“It’s also about growing community through social connections and shared purpose.
“We’re delighted to hear the grant has made a real difference and we look forward to seeing the garden continue to thrive and enable the community to connect with nature and each other.”
Edible Warburton was one of 14 recipients of Yarra Valley Water’s inaugural Community Grants Program.
