Big boost for small scale projects in schools

Applications are now open for the Capital Works Fund, which supports projects that upgrade the condition, character or inclusiveness of Victorian schools.

The Minor Capital Works Fund (MCWF) was established in 2020 and replaced in 2024-25 by the Capital Works Fund (CWF), and as of April 2025, the fund has supported 560 projects with a total of $166.8 million in upgrades.

Schools can apply for one of three funding streams:

Up to $50,000 for small-scale priority or condition-related projects

Up to $300,000 for student inclusion projects

Up to $500,000 for larger-scale priority or condition-related projects

Projects can include classroom refurbishments, toilet upgrades, roof repairs, improved playgrounds and ovals, bike shelters, covered walkways, outdoor learning spaces, fences and flagpoles.

Applications for the funds are open until Friday 4 July. Schools with successful applications will be notified by the end of this year.

The inclusion stream supports projects that cater to all students’ educational and social needs – including children with disability or additional requirements – such as inclusive play equipment or learning areas.

The Labor Government has invested more than $18.5 billion to build new schools and upgrade more than 2,300 existing ones – supporting more than 30,000 jobs in construction and related industries.

“We know that small projects can make a big difference – whether it’s fixing a leaky roof, upgrading toilets or building an inclusive playground, these upgrades make schools better places to learn and work,” Deputy Premier and Minister for Education Ben Carroll said.

“This fund is about making sure every student – no matter their needs – has a safe, inclusive and welcoming school environment.”
