Residents of Millgrove will gather on Sunday 2 March for Clean Up Australia Day to keep the streets of Millgrove clean.
Joining thousands of other clean ups all over Australia, the Millgrove Residents Action Group (MRAG) takes part in Clean Up Australia Day each year, and has been doing so for the last decade.
This year, participants will meet at the Millgrove shopping precinct at 9am and pick up rubbish through to 11.30am before regrouping for morning tea in Millgrove Memorial Park.
MRAG president Maureen Halit said the clean up instils a sense of pride in the residents of the town.
“Well, MRAG’s been in existence for 20 years now and we’ve always had a lot of pride in our town, and keeping it clean is just another thing that we do,” Ms Halit said.
She said the very first clean up MRAG participated in was “massive” because members of the River Valley Church joined in and there wasn’t any maintenance being done around the town.
But since MRAG has started participating in Clean Up Australia Day, the amount of rubbish in the town has decreased, making the job easier.
“It doesn’t take as long at all because people have got such a good sense of pride in the area and so there’s not too much rubbish left around at all,” Ms Halit said.
“We’re very fortunate.”
The clean up day is also an opportunity for socialisation for Millgrove residents while providing a sense of fulfilment to those partaking in the clean up.
It’s recommended to bring your own water, have appropriate clothing for the weather and wear sturdy shoes..
Those interested can sign up at cleanup.org.au or simply turn up on the day.
