With World Mental Health Day having been celebrated across the globe on Thursday 10 October, the World Health Organisation is uniting with partners to highlight the vital connection between mental health and work. Here are three ways to improve your mental health while at work and beyond.
1. Get outside
Spending time outdoors, even for a short break, can have a significant positive impact on mental health. Being in natural environments, such as parks or gardens, can help reduce stress, improve mood, and boost feelings of well-being.
2. Talk to people
Creating and developing social connections and open communication in the workplace is crucial for maintaining good mental health. Encouraging employees to engage in regular conversations, whether it’s with colleagues, managers, or mental health professionals, can help reduce feelings of isolation and provide a supportive environment.
3. Engage in self-care
An alarming 61 per cent of Australian workers have reported experiencing burnout, compared to the global average of 48 per cent. Prioritising self-care activities, such as taking breaks, mindfulness or meditation, engaging in physical exercise, or even calming activities at home such as taking a bath, can help individuals better manage stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
