Three… ways to entertain the kids this school holidays

With the final week of the summer school holidays almost over, many parents in Australia are starting to run out of ideas to keep their kids active and entertained without breaking the budget. Here are three fun and affordable ways to get them off their phones and enjoying the great outdoors during the last stretch of the break.

1. Have a cook-off

Gather the family together in the kitchen and challenge the kids to a friendly cooking competition. Give them a mystery box of seasonal Australian ingredients and see who can come up with the most creative and delicious dish. Not only will this get them away from their screens, but it will also teach them valuable culinary skills and encourage teamwork. You can even get the whole family involved as judges to decide the winner.

2. Explore a local reserve for a team scavenger hunt

Take the kids to explore a nearby park, playground or sporting ground. Divide them into teams and give them a list of items to find, such as different types of leaves, interesting rocks, native birds or certain flora and fauna. This will encourage them to get active, work together and appreciate the natural wonders right in your own backyard. Don’t forget to pack a picnic lunch to enjoy together afterwards.

3. Have a crafty afternoon

Set up a DIY craft station at home with an array of art supplies like paints, coloured pencils, crayons, glue, scissors and recycled materials. Challenge the kids to unleash their creativity and create their own unique masterpieces. This is a great way to tap into their imagination and keep them engaged without the need for digital devices. You can even display their creations around the house when they’re done.
