Candling underway in Three Bridges

Forest Fire Management Victoria are undertaking candling operations in Three Bridges. Picture: ON FILE

Anyone alerted by smoke in Three Bridges need not be alerted as firefighters are undertaking candling operations this week.

Candling is taking place in the Yarra State Forest, Three Bridges – including near Barber Hill Track, Fir Tree Track, Torbetts Road and Mount Beenak Road.

Tracks around the edges of the burn will be closed while the operation is in progress.

Candling is a fuel management technique where fire is used to remove some of the outer bark from the trunks of trees, reducing the risk of embers and short-distance fire spotting during a bushfire.

Reducing the bark fuel hazard through candling improves the efficacy of control lines for planned burns and can reduce fuel for upwards of 5 years.
