Every year across Australia, Children’s Book Week (19 to 25 August 2023) celebrates a love of books and reading; something which is celebrated every week in Yarra Ranges, with Bookaburra Storytimes.
Bookaburra provides free story times for families with young children aged 0-5 years across Yarra Ranges.
Facilitated by passionate, fully trained volunteers the sessions foster a love of reading in children with stories, puppets, music and songs.
“We’re excited to be shining a spotlight on the joy and value of story times this Book Week,” said Council’s Early Years Community Support Officer, Michelle Lehmann.
“Bookaburra story times promote and support the importance of literacy in children’s early years, build parenting confidence to read books with their child at home and encourage books to be incorporated into everyday family routines,” she said.
Yarra Ranges currently hosts Bookaburra Storytimes at seven locations, making it easier than ever for families to participate and bond over reading stories. This initiative complements the range of sessions already available at Yarra Ranges libraries, ensuring an array of options for families to choose from.
Eastern Regional Libraries (Your Library) Manager of Childrens Services, Emma Wallis looks forward to Book Week in particular, every year.
“Book Week is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the magic of reading by acknowledging all the fantastic children’s books that have been published in the past year,” said Ms Wallis.
“The work done by Yarra Ranges Council and Your Library to promote children’s literature ensures a varied program that is fun, free and focused on the interests of children. Activities are designed to develop age-appropriate skills and positive learning experiences as well as strengthening bonds with parents and care-givers,” she said.
“Join us for a story time this Book Week – and don’t forget to dress up as your favourite character!”
Guest storytellers will be visited some of the sessions, including a Family Storytime, 10:30am Wednesday, 23 August at Healesville Library, with Cr. Fiona McAllister, Cr Johanna Skelton and Cr Sophie Todorov.
