Three… facts about wombats

Three facts about our furry friends. Picture: ON FILE

1. Reinforced rump

Wombats have an armoured rump. Their backside is made up of four plates made of mostly cartilage that makes it very hard and tough. They use this to defend themselves from predators. When a dingo comes in a wombat’s burrow looking for a snack, they will find the big behind of a wombat blocking the burrow, where they will have a tough time biting through the cartilage-armoured rump.

2. Wisdom

A group of wombats is called a wisdom. Considered yourself blessed if you are ever lucky enough to come by a wisdom of wombats.

3. Ancestor

The main ancestral relative of the wombat was the diprotodon, which lived 40,000 years ago and was the largest marsupial ever. It looked very similar to a wombat, only it was estimated to be nine to eleven feet in length and over a tonne in weight.
