VicRoads’ geotechnical experts have discovered that the impact of the landslip on the Warburton Highway is more complex than initially expected, with a two-night closure required for further investigation.
Due to the ongoing wet weather and ground saturation, the underground conditions at the site have not stabilised as anticipated.
Vicroads will conduct underground testing on the lane that is currently closed to traffic on Monday 20 February from 7.00pm to 11.00pm with one lane open to traffic.
In order to test the lane that is currently open to traffic, VicRoads will need to fully close the road for up to two nights and will be doing so subject to suitable weather conditions on:
Monday 20 February from 11.00pm to 5.00am on Tuesday 21 February.
Tuesday 21 February from 11.00pm to 5.00am on Wednesday 22 February (if needed).
Traffic will be detoured via Old Warburton Road, which is not a suitable detour for over-dimensional and excessively heavy vehicle loads. VicRoads is working with Yarra Ranges Council to determine whether additional improvements can be made to Old Warburton Road so that it is suitable for larger vehicles as an alternative route to Warburton Highway.
Emergency vehicles will be given priority through the site at all times and provisions will be made to make sure they have access to the community at all times during the event of an emergency.
VicrRoads will update the community with a timeline for repair works to begin before they start.
