Commemorating the 60th anniversary of deployment of troops to Vietnam and the Battle of Long Tan

On Sunday, August 14, 2022, the Yarra Valley Vietnam Veterans Day Committee will be commemorating the 60th anniversary of Australia’s deployment of troops to Vietnam and the Battle of Long Tan, 56 years ago. The commemoration will begin with a march from the Yarra Glen Police Station and continuing to the cenotaph on ANZAC Avenue.

There will be a remembrance ceremony at the Memorial, to be followed by a reception in the Memorial Hall. Our featured speaker will be Emeritus Professor Maxine Duke, AM.

Members of the public who wish to place a wreath or flowers to commemorate the sacrifices of Australia’s Vietnam veterans are welcome to participate.

The parade will start at 10:35 a.m., and the service will commence at 11:00am.

The Yarra Glen RSL has commissioned a sculpture to remember the sacrifice of those who served in Vietnam. It will be unveiled at the service by Mayor Jim Child and Mr. John Methven, OAM, 7RAR veteran.

It is a scale version of the UH-1D “Huey” helicopter, so recognisable and coupled to the memories of the Vietnam War.

The Yarra Valley Vietnam Veterans Day Committee is an initiative of the Vietnam Veterans Community, Outer Eastern Melbourne Sub-branch VVAA, the Croydon, Healesville, Lilydale, Mount Evelyn, Upper Yarra, Warburton and Yarra Glen RSL Sub-branches and the National Servicemen’s Association.

The services are held each year at a participating RSL Sub-branch in the Yarra Valley to remember the sacrifice of those who served their country in Vietnam those 60 years ago.
