Ahead of the 2022 Federal Election, Yarra Ranges Council has advocated that it will prioritise key community concerns such as improving resilience against disasters and climate change, supporting community and business recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic and June 2021 storms, and increasing accessibility to services and infrastructure.

Upper Yarra residents can expect a push for improvements to mobile connectivity in East Warburton and Hoddles Creek and to NBN broadband services in key areas with slow broadband service, and the sealing of roads to support local agricultural businesses, such as active projects on roads in Seville, Woori Yallock and Launching Place.

There will also be a push for $5 million worth of funding for Stage One of the proposed Warburton Mountain Bike Destination and $10 to 15 million to Oonah Belonging Place to construct a facility that enhances Aboriginal health and wellbeing in the Yarra Ranges.

Mayor Jim Child said the projects identified in Council’s advocacy agenda aim to support Yarra Ranges communities individually and as a whole to recover, rebuild and reconnect.

“Council’s advocacy work comes at a critical time for Yarra Ranges. The support we are talking about is needed right now, and Council, together with the community and businesses, cannot drive these recovery efforts alone,” he said.

“This is an opportunity for the Commonwealth to fund the delivery of once-in-a-generation projects that will support our community not only in the short term but for decades to come, and ensure Yarra Ranges can bounce back and maintain its status as one of Victoria’s most loved places.”
