Wandin North Primary School recently unveiled a mural based on the term’s theme of sustainability.
Students were asked to bring in bottle caps of various colours and sizes to contribute to the artwork made by Katrina Webber.
Acting principal Paul Bailey is hoping that the theme of sustainability is making students more aware about waste.
“Throughout term one, students developed artwork from pieces of recycled rubbish to inform them on the impact we have on the environment,” he said.
The theme of sustainability was also strong at the school’s open night on Wednesday 22 May.
“Our open night art show was transformed to a sea based theme featuring plastic crab cups, hanging jellyfish made from paper plates, fish swimming made from CD’s. and other fish made by using bread clips,” Mr Bailey said.
Students are learning about the Take 3 For The Sea movement, which encourages people to take three pieces of rubbish with them when they leave a beach, waterway or anywhere to make a difference.
“We hope that they have an increased awareness of our impact on the environment and then to be clean in the yard and more conscientious when bringing rubbish to school,” Mr Bailey said.
Currently, Wandin North Primary School’s grade one and two students are learning which materials can be recycled and reused.
The grade three and four students are creating makeshift water filters, while the grade five and six students are learning how to reduce waste by composting as well as designing a veggie patch.
