Petrol spill hazmat warning

UPDATE 2.45pm:

A CFA hazmat crew is undertaking atmospheric monitoring of houses and open drains in the immediate area.

The authority has five crews on the scene and has declared the incident under control.

Yarra Valley Water is testing sewer pipes and drains between Wandin and the Launching Place pumping station.

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is now the lead agency for the incident, but responsibility could be handed to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).

The Mail has been in contact with the EPA and is awaiting further details.

Emergency crews are investigating reports of petrol in a Wandin North sewer or storm water drain.

Police are asking people to avoid the area of Sebire Avenue and obey any traffic diversions.

They advised against using naked flames within the exclusion area, and will be on scene to issue further instructions.

A CFA spokesman said the authority received reports of petrol going into a sewer or storm water drain about 1pm.

He said the incident was near the Wild Cattle Creek, and that Yarra Valley Water was on-scene alongside police, fire crews and paramedics.

A hazmat vehicle is on the way to undertake atmospheric testing and monitoring.

We’ll bring you more information as it comes to hand.
