Branching out

Yarra Ranges residents will be able to get fire ready and save on dropping off green waste, with council’s bi-annual bundled branch collection starting on Monday 27 November.
Council will be collecting up to three cubic metres of bundled branches from properties over the coming three weeks, with the first week’s collection starting in the Yarra Valley, followed by council’s urban area and then the Dandenong Ranges.
Yarra Ranges Mayor, Len Cox, said that, while clearing properties could be hard work, it could make the difference during the upcoming fire season.
“Small branches, along with bark and twigs, make up fine fuels which can burn quickly in a bushfire,” Cr Cox said.
“By taking time to clear up now, residents can make their properties safer in the event of an emergency and get rid of branches around their property for free.
“Residents will have a second opportunity to get rid of bundled branches with a second collection taking place alongside our annual hard waste collection early in 2018.”
Up to 20 bundles of branches may be placed by the roadside, at a maximum length of 1.5m long and 20cm in diameter.
Cr Cox said that residents could add $79 or $85 to their annual rates to receive a 120-litre or 240-litre green waste bin to dispose of soft green waste, such as plants and weeds, which is collected every fortnight in eligible areas.
Council fire prevention officers will be inspecting properties across the municipality over coming months as part of Council’s Fire Hazard Inspection Program.
