Thrills in the air

Whether it’s in the air or on the ground, there’s plenty for everyone at this year’s air show at Lilydale Airport.
Taking place on Sunday 26 November, gates are set to open at 11am, with the air show kicking off at 1 pm.
Prior to the show’s start, there will be an array of activities and food available, with a modern and antique aircraft on display, a jumping castle and interactive play opportunities for kids, showbags for sale and a variety of aviation exhibits for those who dream or are serious about learning to fly.
As Lilydale Airport management team member Neroli Merridew explained, highlights of the air show will include aerobatics by two Australian champions, flypasts from the likes of a Mustang Mk 21, Winjeel and Tiger Moth, as well as a formation of little planes and much more.
Skydiving and even model aeroplanes are also included, while programs will be distributed by the Lilydale Squadron of the Australian Air League.
And for those looking to snag themselves an early Christmas present, the airport’s popular Christmas vouchers are ideal presents for flying lessons or scenic flights and will be available to purchase on the day.
“Lilydale Airport is proud to have served the recreational and flying needs in the eastern and northern sectors of Melbourne for almost 50 years,” Neroli said.
“The various flying activities include flying training to airline entry level, business flying, scenic flights over the Yarra Valley and further afield, weekend or extended flying tours and as a base for local aircraft owners.
In addition, the airport provides the local community with emergency services such as police and air ambulance and as a base for the water bomber and fire-spotting flights.”
Entry to the air show will be $10 per vehicle, with a portion of the fee to be shared with the Yarra Glen Men’s Shed.
