TWO men had a lucky escape in Coldstream on Friday morning, after a large cypress tree crushed the front end of their car.
At about 7.45am on Friday, 18 March, a large cypress tree fell on top of a car heading towards Yarra Glen on the Melba Highway from Coldstream, just near the traffic lights.
The tree crushed the top of the car over the seating area, but Coldstream CFA first lieutenant, Graham Brown, said the two men inside were uninjured and out of the car by the time emergency services arrived.
“They were out when we got there,” he said.
“I presume they got themselves out.”
Mr Brown said the pair had complained about sore necks and were taken to hospital by ambulance for observation, and that the men were lucky to escape from the crash.
“If it had gone any lower, one of them would have been killed,” he said.
CFA crews from Coldstream and Lilydale, Ambulance Victoria, SES and VicRoads all attended the crash, and at 10.30am, the Melba Highway was still closed in both directions while VicRoads workers continued to clear debris from the road.
Traffic is currently being diverted via St Huberts Road.
