SOUL Dance struck a chord when it began on the winter solstice at Warburton three years ago.
Karina Doughty asked some friends with dance and facilitation backgrounds to join her to create a weekly dance experience, and over 150 Friday nights of dance later, it is more popular than ever.
Karina described Soul Dance as a creative and soulful dance practice that allowed people to explore and express themselves through movement.
“For some it is a powerful weekly practice of spiritual and emotional depth – others come for a great workout, or to have a fun and playful time with friends,” she said.
“The beauty of Soul Dance is that you are free to travel your own unique dance journey.”
Soul dance is held every Friday night at Warburton Arts Centre and for its third birthday celebration on 19 June, there is an invitation to anyone who hasn’t been to a session before to join in for free.
“Each week one of the six facilitators creates a two-hour music set with an intention in mind,” Karina said.
“That intention is shared with the participants a week in advance and can offer a point of focus or inspiration for the dance.”
Soul Dance is one of the events promoted through Yarra Ranges council’s ‘Dance Tracks’, celebrating dance participation and performance and recognising the holistic health benefits of regular dance.
