YARRA Ranges will welcome its newest citizens as part of Australia Day 2013 celebrations.
About 65 people from 15 countries will officially join the Australian family in a special ceremony at the Heritage Golf and Country Club on Saturday 26 January.
“The Yarra Ranges is a terrific place to live, and it is great to have so many people from a range of cultural backgrounds with a desire to start their lives as Australians here,” Yarra Ranges Mayor Jim Child said.
The Australia Day citizenship ceremony for the Yarra Ranges region will be held in conjunction with the Heritage Golf Tournament featuring 2012 Australian PGA Championship winner Daniel Popovic.
“This is the first time that council has celebrated the Australia Day citizenship ceremony and awards event in this format,” Cr Child said.
“We’re really looking forward to this important occasion.”
This joint event will incorporate the citizenship ceremony, the Australia Day awards along with an exciting range of family activities and live music, as well as hosting the Yarra Valley Food Market.
The free event will be held at the Heritage Golf and Country Club in Chirnside Park and is open to all residents.
Australia Day is the most popular day to become a citizen, with more than 17,000 people expected to become citizens across the nation.
“I’m looking forward to being there to celebrate with our newest citizens as they participate in their first Australia Day as Australian citizens,” Cr Child said.
