LISA Lawther took the opportunity to read one last story in the Mobile Library at Chum Creek last week.
The mobile service did its last run to the Chum Creek Primary School on Wednesday as part of the restructure of Yarra Ranges Council’s library services.
“The kids all look forward to coming down to talk to Maggie,” Ms Lawther said, thanking librarian and bus driver Maggii Tinson for the great service she has provided to her three sons, Riley, Nathan and Jasper.
The mobile library was part of Lisa’s childhood, too.
“I remember coming down and sitting in the corner and reading the books when I was at school here,” she said.
“This is really sad… the end of an era for us.”
Ms Tinson said it was a sad day for her as well after seven years with the service. “It has been wonderful and I will miss coming here to Chum Creek and miss all the kids,” she said.
Chum Creek is one of nine small communities to lose the mobile service including Don Valley, Hoddles Creek, Powelltown, East Warburton, Dixons Creek, Yellingbo, Gruyere and Yarra Glen.
The service has been retained, but at a reduced level along the Warburton Highway with Warburton, Wesburn, Millgrove, Seville and Woori Yallock included in the rebranded Yarra Ranges Outreach Vehicle library service.
