YARRA Junction Primary School students are mixing education and eclairs when they go behind the scenes at Gladysdale Bakery.
This month students Nathan and Sherri had the opportunity to discover the operational side of the Yarra Junction bakery.
Yarra Junction Primary School principal Chris Thomas said the morning was part of a valuable that teaching students about maths in the workplace, careers and community.
“The main purpose is for students to be involved in the community and to create career pathways for them,” Mr Thomas said.
“Even at this age they start to see what careers they might like to pursue.
“Students have also been working with aged care homes and Men’s Shed.”
Bakery owner Jason Rush said students helped prepare whatever the bakery was making for either its Yarra Junction or new Warburton store.
“What the kids make on the day is whatever our production is,” Mr Rush said.
“We aim to teach the students about the responsibilities of running a business.”
Nathan and Sherri spent an hour and a half at the bakery on the day helping to make sausage rolls and a coffee slice.
Both students agreed that their favourite part of the day was seeing the behind-the-scene process and helping to make sausage rolls.
“It was really interesting, especially what the sausage roll mix looked like,” Nathan said.
“It was a bit like what red meat would look like if you put it in a blender.”
