New free documentary screening in Warburton highlights ambitious local figures

The Yarra Ranges Council will host a free screening of the feature-length documentary on 11 September which tells a story about two people trying to effect change within our economic systems, while going through personal changes themselves.

The screening will help launch the Upper Yarra Local Development Strategy’s (UYLDS) short film, which includes footage of community members describing their part in plans to help diversify the local economy and bring social and economic benefits to the region.

Guest speakers will discuss the topics in more detail, and a light supper will be provided to attendees.

Yarra Ranges mayor Cr Jim Child said the films together helped to describe the ethos of the UYLDS.

“The end of native forest timber harvesting has had an impact on the economies of the Upper Yarra, with many locals having to seek new work, learn new skills and start over,” Cr Child said.

“The Upper Yarra Local Development Strategy, which is funded by the State Government, has been working to help communities create local opportunities for new enterprises, diversify the economy and support the region.

“The short film being screened in Warburton showcases some of the work done to date, while the documentary being screened alongside it gives a wider view of the issue and how our economies and communities need to be structured around supporting the people in them, and the environment we work to protect and enhance.

“I encourage locals and Yarra Ranges community members to come along and see more.”

Tickets are strictly limited to the documentary screening, and booking is essential.
