Despite the Federal Government ‘cutting’ the Roads for Community funding recently, two more projects in the Upper Yarra will go ahead in resealing roads.

Henry Street, Yarra Junction and Henry Street, Lester Street and Everard Grove, Woori Yallock have had special charges declared for residents at the Tuesday 22 November Yarra Ranges Council meeting.

Yarra Ranges Council Mayor Jim Child put forward the motion and said in regards to the Roads for Community project, we’ll keep pushing ahead.

“The Council gave notice of its intention to review the special charge and having received no submissions, declare the charge, it’s going to be another great outcome for the people of Henry Street,” he said.

“Mr McCarthy and his team are doing a great job and they’re doing that job under significant pressure at the moment with this federal government funding being threatened to be removed.”

Councillor Andrew Fullagar seconded the motion and said the Council continues to welcome the projects.

“What a great program, and I think it’s appropriate to give a shout-out to our team who’s pushed ahead, so diligently up till now so that we’ve progressed it as far as we have,” he said.

“Let’s hope we can continue into the future because there are some incredibly impacted roads that are really being damaged at the moment and these latest rainstorms really highlighted the need to get this money back.”

Councillor Richard Higgins said the Roads for Community project would be sadly missed.

“If the Federal government decide to continue in their current trend and take the money away from us, it would be diabolical,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to seeing Henry Street, Lester Street and Everard Grove dusted with a nice paved surface.”

Both motions were carried unanimously.
