MOST semi-finals looked like they were heading into Monday’s reserve day when a massive storm struck the Dandenongs about 2.50pm on Saturday.
At Upwey, Ferntree Gully lost its first wicket at 32 before losing 5/10 to slump to 6/73 with only Jayden Bradbury (39) getting started.
Bad light stopped play, followed soon afterwards by rain and hailstones the size of golf balls.
The Upwey club rooms were flooded and had several skylights smashed by hail.
“I’ve never seen hail like that in all the time I’ve been here,” said spectator Clarrie, 76, who has been watching sport at Upwey for more than 50 years.
Only 38 overs were possible and, before the break, the Gully was under a fair amount of pressure thanks to good spells by Upwey bowlers Ben Wood (3/16) and skipper Paul Wilson.
In the other semi at Kings Park, Johnson Park got off to a good start at 1/49 until Upper Gully pegged it back before the storm, having the Sharks 4/79 in an even contest.
