A VISIT by 10 Chinese students to Upper Yarra Secondary College last week has provided some insights into what is unique to each culture, and what they have in common.
Damper is definitely an Aussie experience. Mobile phones and cameras … no communication problems there!
Songling No1 Middle School joins schools in Thailand, Japan and Germany as sister schools to UYSC.
The Years 7, 8 and 9 students were partnered with a UYSC family for the week and took part in classes, learned a bit about aussie rules football and took in the sights including Melbourne Zoo and Mt Donna Buang.
Accompanying the students were principal Wang, teachers Vera Lu Yanyun and Emily Zhang Xiujuan and Education Bureau representative Mr Wu.
The visit follows a trip to China last year by UYSC principal Robert Miller and teachers Simon Tacey and Bronwen Foley.
Ms Foley hoped that before too long students would be part of a return exchange to visit the Songling school.
“This type of cultural exchange is fantastic especially for our student demographic where many of our students don’t much of an opportunity to meet people from other backgrounds,” she said.
“This helps them develop a better understanding of the world and perhaps encourage them to travel,” she said.
