Sanders back on top after stage eight

The Yarra Ranges rally-raid legend Daniel “Chucky” Sanders reclaimed the top spot overall after a brilliant performance in stage eight of the 2026 Dakar Rally.

He finished in second position after stage eight behind Spaniard Tosha Schareina and has managed to put six minutes between himself and KTM team mate Ricky Brabec in the overall ranking.

Competitors began stage eight in Wadi ad Dawasir and raced through desert valleys at high speeds for 483 kilometres. The stage ended at the Bivouac Refuge, where competitors rest up in rough conditions.

Sanders said in a Facebook post that the “body, mind and bike are feeling great” after a good stage eight run.

“Today was a good day and we regained the overall lead. I now have a lead of about six minutes, but we need to be considerate of strategy for the next four days.

“Tonight we camp in the desert without shower, internet, mechanics and the team #aussiestyle.”
