Loss of another timber pioneer

Des Morrish, one of Upper Yarra’s timber industry pioneers has died, aged 98.

Mr Morrish passed away on Tuesday.

Born and bred in Warburton, he was the last of the pioneers who logged before the days of bulldozers and chain saws.

He was just 19 when he turned out to help fight the brutal 1939 bushfires.

Des was a natural story teller, joining others on a panel of 1939 survivors in January 2009 when Warburton commemorated the 70th anniversary of the bushfires and made submissions following major bushfires in the years after.

A memorial service will be held at Heritage and Heritage in Woori Yallock a 10am on Thursday, 26 July.

The Mail extends condolences to Mr Morrish’s family.
