State Member for Eildon, Liberal Cindy McLeish MP has made claims that more needs to be done to address safety issues on the Healesville-Kooweerup Road.
In July this year Ms McLeish wrote to Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan calling for immediate upgrades to be undertaken on the notoriously dangerous road.
“It has taken the Minister three months to respond to this request made on behalf of our community,” Ms McLeish said.
“This just shows the government does not believe this issue is important enough to warrant immediate and significant action.”
Mr Donnellan’s response said that advisory 55km/h warning signs had been installed, while VicRoads was investigating other treatments in consultation with Victoria Police.
Although recently VicRoads had been working with local police and the CFA to improve the roadway and had undertaken resurfacing works along the section of dangerous road.
VicRoads will also be undertaking a pavement reseal and road widening (where possible) on Healesville-Kooweerup Road between Syme and Dalry Road in early 2018.
“VicRoads is working with Victoria Police and the local CFA on ways to improve road safety on Healesville-Kooweerup Road in Woori Yallock,” Vicroads’ acting regional director of metro south east Savoula Lidis said.
“Safety is our number one priority which is why we’ve completed short-term safety works while more permanent options for improving safety along the road are being considered.”
Ms McLeish has also raised the need for electronic 40km/h speed signs to be installed at Woori Yallock Primary School, which she said the Andrews Labor Government had continued to ignore since 2014.
“After raising this matter seven times in parliament, separately writing to the Minister and tabling a community petition, the government continues to ignore the need to keep our children safe,” she said.
