Common memorial

By Kath Gannaway

There’s a big difference between the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and the memorial that the Seville War memorial Committee is planning for the town.
It’s what they have in common – honouring and preserving the memory of Australia’s servicemen and women – that is at the heart of Director of the Australian War Memorial, Dr Brendan Nelson AO’s visit to Seville on Sunday 16 July.
Dr Nelson, who will be accompanied by Federal Member for Casey, Tony Smith MP, is guest speaker at a fund-raising Morning Tea at Wild Cattle Creek Estate in Seville.
In the year which commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Light Horse Charge at Beersheba, there will also be a display of memorabilia associated with Breaker Morant.
Seville War Memorial Committee member Derry Aulich said previously unseen photographs of the Light Horse camp in Cairo, the flag that was draped over Morant’s coffin and a munitions belt carried by the horses are among the items on display.
“This is a display of never-seen Breaker Morant memorabilia and people won’t be disappointed at having the opportunity to see these items here in Seville,” Mr Aulich said.
Admission includes morning tea and a commemorative gift.
Bookings close on Wednesday, 12 July.
