Rider dies on the spot

A POLICEMAN in his thirties has lost his life after a motorcycle accident in Reefton on Sunday 21 February just after midday.

Two men were riding their motorbikes on the Warburton-Woods Point Road about 12.15pm when one of the riders clipped an oncoming car in an attempt to overtake.

The first rider successfully passed around the car but the second rider made contact with the car, lost control of his motorbike and was hit by the vehicle.

Emergency services attempted to revive the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The off-duty police officer was based in Moonee Ponds and is survived by two children.

The complete circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation.

This accident brings the road toll for 2016 to 42, with an increase of two on the 40 road deaths recorded this time last year.
