A HEALESVILLE man will shed a decade’s worth of hair to raise money for cancer research, as the World’s Greatest Shave comes around for another year.

Jarryd Duits, 23, will go under the razor on Saturday 12 March, at a fund-raiser event to be held at Healesville’s Grind and Groove.

When the night comes around, Mr Duits will shave his head – he has not had a haircut in almost 10 years.

He said he had been meaning to participate in the World’s Greatest Shave in recent years, but that the date often crept up on him.

“I completely forgot,” he said.

“I got to October, November last year, and I was like ‘You know what? I’m going to do this.”

Mr Duits said he would try to raise $3000 for the Leukaemia Foundation in the lead-up to the shave, and that, if the goal was reached, he would also shave off his facial hair.

Once the shave is over, his hair will also be donated to a charity, to be made into a wig for someone undergoing chemotherapy.

As of Thursday 11 February, Mr Duits had raised $291 through his World’s Greatest Shave sponsor page, and was also raising money through donations from workmates at Aurrum, where he works as a nurse in the Memory Support Wing.

He said that, should he reach his goal, the $3000 would be used to help fund cancer research, provide care for people undergoing treatment for cancer, or support for someone recently diagnosed with the disease.

The fund-raiser event will begin at 8pm and run through the night, with the big shave set for 10.30pm.

The event will also be an open mic night for musicians, and the $10 entry fee will be donated to Mr Duits’ fund-raising campaign.
