THE Pride Cup initiative has continued to win widespread acclaim, this time through taking out a prestigious 2015 VicHealth Award.
The awards acknowledge programs designed to promote health and wellbeing in Victoria.
Minister for Health, Jill Hennessy, helped present the ‘Building Health through Sport’ award at the National Gallery of Victoria on Tuesday, 1 December.
The Pride Cup was created by Yarra Glen Football Netball Club coach Dean de Munk and assistant coach Sam Hills to support Yarra Glen footballer, Jason Ball, who came out as a gay footballer in 2012.
The initiative has since been promoted throughout Victoria and the concept is set to be staged at AFL level next season, with a match between St Kilda and Sydney.
Jason Ball, his father, David, and Yarra Ranges Shire representatives attended the ceremony to accept the award.
David Ball said they were delighted with the acknowledgement.
“The VicHealth award encourages organisations to promote healthy living and mental health is a big part of that,” he said.
“Mental health is a key target of the Pride Cup.”
Mr Ball said the audience seemed to be particularly receptive to their award.
“It’s good to know that many knew who we are and what we’re about.”
Also presenting the award was VicHealth Chief Executive Officer, Jerril Rechter, who said the awards showcase the diversity, quality and impact of health promotion programs.
“The standard of entries was very high and the quality of finalists was outstanding,” she said.
Meanwhile, Mr Ball said the Pride Cup has been included in the Yarra Valley Mountain District fixture for next season.
The match will take place in the Round 1 clash between Yarra Glen at King Lake at the Yarra Glen Recreation Reserve on 16 April, 2016.
Mr Ball added the club has enjoyed a productive recruiting season, with some top quality talent returning to the club.
