THE weather at the Woods Point Gun Club for the September King of the Mountain championships was ideal.
The eye opener saw 11 shooters return to the clubhouse with perfect scores: Ian Findlay, Jason Matthews, Trevor Ewert, Ron Press, Phillip Desmond, Darren Clark, Ken Skinner, Mick Ward, Peter West, John Wood and Jim West.
The shared cash prize was sliced pretty thin.
The first of the championships was 20 targets Single Barrel with Geoff Hill and Jason Matthews posting 20/20 on the scoreboard; Hill winning the sash after a short shoot off.
The winners were: AA Grade – Matthews 20/20, Desmond 19/20; A Grade – Hill 20/20, Clark 17/20. B Grade – P. West 19/20, Byran Foley 18/20 and in C Grade Michael Bevis 15/20 was 1st from Max Cleland 14/20.
The main event was 30 targets handicap and Peter West showed a clean pair of heels to take the championship outright with 28/30.
The shoot off for the minor placings resulted in Trevor Newman 2nd, 32/35, Desmond 3rd 31/35 and Mick Ward 4th, 29/33.
A 25 target Tower Championship finished the day with Trevor Ewert, Desmond, Newman and Ward, all 25/25, vying for the sash.
Desmond’s 34/34 gave him the championship with the minor places taken by Ward, 33/34, Newman, 31/32 and Ewert, 29/30. Matthews and Hill shot 24/25 in the event but to no avail.
Phillip Desmond capped off a good day to take the King of the Mountain High Gun sash, 71/75, from Mick Ward 70/75 and Trevor Newman and Peter West, both 69/75.
The next shoot is the Bernie Elstrek Memorial Championships on Sunday 25 October, starting at 10.30am.
