WARBURTON Senior Citizens members were happily tired after a very successful lunch to raise funds to support local people affected by cancer.
More than 60 people attended the lunch on Monday 16 March, at the Warburton club rooms, where WSC members had prepared a delicious meal and organised raffles and an auction in support of cancer support group, Yarra Valley Ladies in Pink (YVLP).
WSC president Barbara Mutsaers said everyone involved was very happy to be able to hand over $2050 last week, as well as fulfilling their aim to raise awareness of a number of issues around cancer.
“We felt it was time to do something extra for the community outside of our senior citizens activities, and it was very satisfying,” she said.
Ms Mutsaers said among a number of highlights on the day was the inspirational talk by Judith McGrath from YVLP, and the overwhelming support from the business and wider community.
Yarra Ranges mayor Maria McCarthy and Eildon MP Cindy McLeish attended the lunch and praised the efforts of everyone involved.
Ms McLeish, in a Member’s Statement in Parliament, commended the organising team which she said had put in “a huge effort”.
“It was so amazing to see the level of support given by organisations and businesses within the community,” she said.
Cr McCarthy said it had been a phenomenal six months for the YVLP with local organisations reaching out to support their work and spreading the word about the good work they do.
“The best part about this is that it is local people raising funds for local people who are affected by cancer,” she said.
“$2050 is a phenomenal amount.
“The amount of raffle prizes and auction items were incredible, and even from that perspective, where you have the local community so generously supporting them, it shows that everybody is touched by cancer, and want to help.
“It’s just great”.
