Rubbish clampdown in forest swoop

CAMPING areas and known rubbish dumping spots came under scrutiny by Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning officers and police in February.
DELWP forest officer Joy Harte said department officers spent a Sunday in the Yarra State Forest last month engaging with the public about bushfire safety, planned burning and trail bike riding.
The operation was supported by Victoria Police which also carried out random breath testing and vehicle checks.
Ms Harte said officers using four wheel drives and trail bikes patrolled the forest concentrating on the camping and rubbish dumping spots.
“It was a great opportunity to talk to forest users about the work we do in state forests at this time of year including planned burning and bushfire safety,” Ms Harte said.
“DELWP staff also spoke to visitors about the diverse range of recreation opportunities the Yarra State Forest offers,” she said.
“It was disappointing to find the Britannia Creek Cave site littered with rubbish including a mattress and television.
“A clean up for this area is being organised.
“The day was all about how DELWP and different agencies can work with the community to better protect the Yarra State Forest.”
