Ottrey sends Burras packing

THE action on the field certainly matched the heat in the YVCA Round 7, week 2 games on Saturday.
Many would have predicted Yarra Junction would have struggled to defend their total of 151, compiled on week one against the in-form Warburton-Millgrove. What turned out was a pretty dismal performance by the Burras batsmen as they had no answers for the probing outswing bowling of Terry Ottrey. Ottrey relished the opportunity to exact some revenge on some Eagles defectors, and his figures of 6/32 reduced the home team to a batting mess. Despite a defiant 26 from Ben Lever at the top of the order, and Adam Humphrey’s 33 at the end, the Burras just passed 100.
With a team full of young stars reaching their peak, many pencilled in Woori Yallock as the next big challengers to the crown. Chasing the Blues’ 222 from week one was the perfect opportunity for the Tigers to do such. After a tight battle between bat and ball early on the second day, Woori Yallock then rose to the challenge. The Tigers middle order challenged the Blues to think beyond standard tactic of sheer force, as Mick Dwyer’s dogged knock of 73 was well complemented by the attacking contrast of Simon Young (39) and Greg Selby (32). With the visitors needing a further 15 runs with four wickets in hand, the game was turned on its head by an unlikely hero.
The recently graduated junior, Brayden Caldwell, stole the show. With three wickets from one over, Caldwell saw the Tigers lose their last four wickets without a run. Seville’s pacemen were spectators as Caldwell (3/26) and fellow spinner Scott Troyhan (2/40) bowled their team to victory.
Mount Evelyn will now travel to Woori Yallock after escaping from Hoddles Creek with an ugly win. The Rovers have been struggling to post a decent score with the bat, and that continued last week with a poor total of 154. With Hoddles Creek sitting at 3/44 overnight, the visitors had to muster a rescue mission with the ball.
The early going saw the Derix boys setting themselves for a long day at the crease against some probing bowling. After eeking themselves to 3/68, the home team crashed to lose 7/16 in the space of nine overs, to be rolled for 84. Emerging all-rounder Gareth Fraser (4/12) showed his value with the ball as he combined with the swing of Chris Anderson (3/13) to destroy the Wombats’ tail.
