WILMA ‘Billie’ Dougherty has taken out the top title at Yarra Junction Bowling Club, winning the Ladies Singles Championship Finals earlier this month.
Ms Dougherty took on last year’s winner, Fida Rees, on Sunday 7 December in a match that stretched on for three hours and five minutes, with 31 ends.
The winner of the match was declared when one of the competitors received 25 points, and 90-year-old Ms Dougherty won all four points on the last end to snatch victory from Ms Ree’s grip.
Ron Eke from Yarra Junction Bowling Club wrote that both competitors put up fierce competition.
“As you’d tell from the score and the length of the match, the lead passed back and forth with neither lady giving ground,” he wrote in an email to the Mail.
“By the end, none of the members who turned out to cheer them on had any fingernails left!”
