IT WAS a big week for Yarra Ranges Athletics with many highlights, none more so than the two Victorian Best Performances recorded by the mixed age medley relay teams.
Yarra Ranges Athletics had five teams competing at the Little Athletics Victoria State Relay Championships, held at Lakeside Stadium on Saturday.
Some outstanding performances resulted in two golds and two bronze medals. On top of that the 9-11 girls medley team of Taylah Tillotson, Maddie Laven, Kiara Flavel and Olivia DeVincentis broke the Victorian record they set at the Region relays held in November.
Not to be outdone our 12-13 girls medley team of Estelle Peterson, Georgia Laven, Chelsea Thompson and Lily Peacock also broke the state record set in November.
Congratulations also to the 12-13 boys medley team of Joel Ryan, Camden Hewitson, Patrick Keating and Harrison Van Duuren for their third place; and to Patrick, Harrison, Lily and Chelsea for an outstanding third place in the under-13 mixed 4×100 relay. In other results the under-10 boys 4×100 team finished 18th.
It was a fantastic effort by the young athletes and their parents. Special thanks to Sophie for organising the warm-ups from the first till the last event, and to Malcolm who coached the athletes in the lead up weeks to ensure smooth baton changes – all contributing to a great day.
Club athletics was held on a balmy Friday evening. Evening athletics provides for a different atmosphere to morning athletics with the warmer, calmer conditions producing excellent performances. This week’s round was no different with some awesome performance including the under-10 girls 400m where every athlete ran a personal best.
Athletics Victoria held the opening round of the AV Knockout. Several athletes took the opportunity to test themselves against the best in their event and age group. Lateisha Wills (under-16) ran 12.35 for 100m, 13.10 90m hurdles, Aiden Pace (under-18) ran 53.87 for 400m, Joe Fishburn (Open men) 1.75 high jump, Dylan Brookes (under-20) 5.72 long jump, Harrison Van Duuren (under-14) 2.26.92 for 800m, Lily Thompson (under-16) 5.08.33 for 1500m and Lachlan Scully (under-18) 4.15.20 for 1500m.
Yarra Ranges Athletics’ next round of club athletics is on Friday 18 December. Events start at 5pm with all senior members invited to compete and a special guest expected during the evening.
The final round of AV Shield for 2014 will be at Bill Stewart Athletics Track, Burwood (Nunawading Track) on Saturday 20 December from 1pm.
