YARRA Valley band Under the Arch has the finals in their sights, after progressing to the next round of the Melbourne Music Bank competition.
The three-piece band, made up of Kate Fyander, Darcy Haag and Aidan King, was announced yesterday (Monday 20 October) as one of the four finalists in the competition.
The competition asked bands to create a song inspired by Melbourne – Under the Arch’s song, Free, was written about the freedom that Melbournites have in their city.
“It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor you can fall in love with this great city and get lost in a dream,” the band’s profile reads.
Under the Arch was named as one of the top 12 finalists last month, and band members campaigned for public votes to send them through to the next round.
The public heeded the call, and the band will now play at the Melbourne recital centre with the other finalists on 29 October, with an overall winner chosen by a panel of judges.
The winner will have a CD recorded and printed 500 times, a film-clip recorded, and will receive marketing and publicity advice, their song featured in an advertisement for the bank and performance opportunities – a career-bolstering prize for any young band.
Kate, who sings and plays guitar, said the band’s musical style is inspired by John Butler, Angus and Julia Stone and Iron and Wine, and that Free was written in just four days for the competition.
The song was recorded at Badger Creek’s Momentum Studios by Michael Hardinge.
