WESBURN under-12s have put the club back on the front foot winning the Bulldogs’ first grand final in a decade.
“The Wesburn drought is over,” DRJFL president John Myers told the ecstatic young players and their supporters, as they celebrated their 13-point win over Emerald at Woori Yallock on Sunday.
There was very little in the game at half-time with Wesburn just two points ahead of the Bombers, but as they headed into the last quarter Wesburn had increased the margin to double Emerald’s score, 4.6 (30) to 2.3 (15).
Emerald kept the pressure up in the final quarter but missed the opportunity to add goals instead of points, finishing 3.5 (23) to Wesburn’s 5.6 (36).
Wesburn coach Adrian Clements congratulated the Emerald boys saying: “You got us on the last game and I think that only made us more hungry to win in the grand final today.”
“You came home strong and well done,” he added.
He said the team had turned things around at Wesburn with kids wanting to play footy with the club.
Wesburn president Chris Reid told the young Bulldogs: “You deserve to be here”.
“What a champion team – to lose just one game for the year is huge,” he said.
Wesburn’s Angus Nelson was named best-on-ground with Emerald’s Oscar Miles named best opposition player.
