Speed slashed for safety

By JESSE GRAHAM

THE speed limit coming out of the Black Spur near Narbethong will be dropped next week, in an effort to make roads safer.
VicRoads announced on Tuesday 2 September, that the speed limit between the end of the Black Spur and Narbethong will be dropped from 100km/h to 80km/h.
Weather permitting, new speed signs are expected to be placed along the stretch of road between Monday 15 and Friday 19 September.
As a result, the speed limit will remain at 80km/h consistently from the area past Maroondah Reservoir in Healesville through to Narbethong’s township.
The area, which stretches from about 264-606 Maroondah Highway, has seen four serious injury crashes in the last five years.
VicRoads regional director of the North Eastern region, Bryan Sherritt, said lowering the limit was a logical decision.
“Changing speed zones in certain locations, like this one, provide a more logical and consistent speed limit for that stretch of road while keeping speeds appropriate for the area,” he said.
He said it was the organisation’s role to review speed limits and “to ensure they were in line with current guidelines and that they met existing safety and traffic requirements.”
“In this instance, VicRoads has listened to community feedback and after appropriate due diligence, is making a change which will improve road safety in the area.”
