POLICE are searching for a witness to last week’s head-on crash in Coldstream, who may have filmed one of the cars involved, as investigations continue.
Victoria Police put out a call last week for witnesses to the crash, which took place at 7.50am on Monday 11 August near Rochford Winery.
A silver Mitsubishi Mirage, driven by a 29-year-old Warburton Woman towards Healesville is believed to have veered into the wrong lane and crashed into a red Ford Cougar, driven by a 43-year-old Healesville man.
Officers are hoping to speak to one witness in particular, who may have filmed the silver car moving erratically before the crash happened.
“We’re appealing for anyone with information to come forward,” Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable Andrew Shenton said.
“Even if they don’t think it’s much, we’d really encourage people to call Crime Stoppers.”
Witness, Troy Jansen, was travelling immediately behind the silver car, and said the driver was behaving erratically, swerving and veering on the highway between Coldstream and the crash site.
A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed that Mr Jansen’s triple zero call took place, and that he has been spoken to as part of the investigation.
LSC Shenton said that police were still trying to piece together why the crash had happened.
“For some reason, the silver car heading to Healesville has gone on the wrong side of the road … and that’s the end result,” he said.
“We’re unsure as to why that’s happened – we’re not sure if she’s drifted across or attempted to overtake.
“It’s not a spot where you’d think about overtaking.”
Both drivers were airlifted from the scene, after being cut out of their vehicles by SES and CFA members.
The Warburton woman was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with critical injuries to her head, a fractured leg and pelvis injuries, but had her condition downgraded to serious by Wednesday 13 August.
The Healesville man was taken to the Alfred Hospital with leg fractures and pelvis injuries, and was in a stable condition.
The Maroondah Highway was closed down in both directions shortly after the crash, as Major Collision Investigaiton Unit officers came to assess the scene.
The road wasn’t re-opened until 2.30pm – almost seven hours after the crash.
The registration of the silver car was PIU 088, and police are urging any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
