CURING wild wombats of the painful scourge of mange involves an unlikely combination of ice-cream lids, high-tech motion-sensitive cameras and dedicated volunteers.
The Mange Management Group launched its program in the Upper Yarra last year with a sponsorship from Warburton Community Bank and is looking now to involve more community members in this life-saving work.
Jenny Mattingley from Mange Management Inc. said mange didn’t go away unless it was treated, and that had proved difficult with wild wombats in the past.
The ‘invention’ they came up with to deliver the treatment to infected wombats at the burrow entrance is as clever as it is simple.
They will hold an information and display after noon at the Warburton Community Space on Wednesday 9 July from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.
Ms Mattingley said the presentation and afternoon tea was an opportunity to explain the program to the local community.
