YVMDFNL Wrap: Round 9
First Division Seniors
Warburton Millgrove 14.12 (96) d Emerald 10.10 (70)
WARBURTON notched up their third win of the season with a hard fought 26-point win over Emerald.
Emerald are yet to win a game this year, but they were in with a real shot in this game as they led at quarter time by 13 points on the back of some good team play.
Warby clawed their way back in the second term, but still trailed by two points at the main break.
The third quarter was where the game broke open as Warburton started to find more space which created more opportunities to score.
They booted five goals-to-one to take a four-goal lead into the last quarter.
The last term was an even contest, with both sides booting three goals, but it was Warburton’s third quarter that was the catalyst for their victory.
Warburton Millgrove best players: T. Walker, G. Morris, A. Pettinella (1 goal).
Emerald best players: M. Dompietro, M. Livermore (1 goal), J. Taylor (4 goals).
Monbulk 21.13 (139) d Healesville 10.8 (68)
MONBULK has bounced back to winning form with a terrific four- quarter performance over a Healesville side that was denied any real run.
Monbulk started well, booting four goals-to-two in the first term, but realistically could have been further in front with the amount of play they had.
The second quarter saw Monbulk stretch their lead as they put on another five majors to Healesville’s two and at the long break, it was Monbulk leading by a very handy 34 points.
The second half was more of the same; Healesville certainly weren’t playing bad but Monbulk was just a class above for the entire match. They had multiple scoring options and actually finished the day with three of their players scoring five majors.
Monbulk outscored Healesville 12 goals-to-six in the second half to win by a hefty 71 points in a fine performance.
Monbulk best players: S. Whittington (1 goal), J. Anderson, K. Gray.
Healesville best players: N. Mende, H. Prest (1 goal), P. Monk (1 goal).
Upwey Tecoma 16.10 (106) d Olinda Ferny Creek 9.22 (76)
UPWEY sit one game clear on top of the ladder after beating a dreadfully inaccurate Olinda by five goals.
Upwey was by far the better side when it came to capitalising on its opportunities which top sides do, whereas Olinda just couldn’t seem to get the ball through the big sticks.
At half time, Upwey led by 38 points but in fact had two less scoring shots than Olinda with a score line of Upwey: 11.5 (71) to Olinda: 3.15 (33).
The second half of this game was played more on Olinda’s terms as they did outscore Upwey 6.7-to-5.5 in the half, but Olinda’s early inaccuracy cost them while Upwey’s composure was all class when it mattered which gained them a well-deserved victory.
Upwey Tecoma best players: B. Hinton (1 goal), S. Currey (2 goals), S. Gooley.
Olinda Ferny Creek best players: N. Broomhall, O. Millwood (1 goal), T. Millwood (2 goals).
Wandin 19.20 (134) d Belgrave 6.8 (44)
WANDIN found some of their best form with a massive 90-point win over a Belgrave side that looks devoid of confidence.
Wandin shot out to a 26-point lead at the first break, but it was their second quarter that put the game out of Belgrave’s reach.
They booted six goals while holding Belgrave to just three points, and at half time Wandin’s lead was a match winning 62 points. Wandin continued their good form in the third, booting five goals but Belgrave did at least show a small amount of fight slotting three majors.
The last quarter saw Wandin boot three goals-to-one to finish the day with the sort of victory they have been looking for this season, and maybe the start of something going forward for the rest of the year.
Wandin best players: K. Talevski (4 goals), H. Dudink (1 goal), J. Bayliss (2 goals).
Belgrave best players: S. Nicholson, C. Kelf, J. McDermott.
Woori Yallock 12.18 (90) d Mount Evelyn 3.10 (28)
IN A game that was touted as being one of the matches of the round turned out to be anything but.
Woori was dominant from start to finish.
They started the day on fire with a seven-goal first term while Mount Evelyn could only manage two behinds.
The second term was a bit of a non event with goals hard to come by, with both sides scoring one major but it was Woori up by 45 points at the half and in complete control.
Any chance of a Mount Evelyn comeback was quickly put to rest in the third as Woori booted three goals to Mount Evelyn’s one and their lead was an insurmountable 59 points at the last break.
The last quarter was a slog in tough conditions with both sides scoring a goal, but this game belonged to Woori Yallock from the first bounce.
Woori Yallock best players: B. Monkhorst (3 goals), M. Bonuda, M. Witkowski.
Mount Evelyn best players: A. Gibbons (1 goal), C. Urquhart, R. Davis.
Second Division Seniors
Gembrook Cockatoo 8.4 (52) d Thornton Eildon 5.10 (40)
GEMBROOK came away with a 12-point victory, thanks to a good first half.
They started the day well with a five goal-to-one quarter to take a 22-point lead into quarter time.
Gembrook may have only scored one goal in the second quarter but they held Thornton scoreless and at half time their lead was 29 points.
Thornton fought hard in the third, booting 2.4 while holding Gembrook to just one behind and at the last change Thornton was right back in it, trailing by just 14 points.
The last quarter was a torrid affair in pretty tough conditions. Thornton battled hard but Gembrook had the answers, with both sides finishing the quarter with two majors but it was Gembrook that walked off with the points.
Gembrook Cockatoo best players: M. Quinn, B. Dillon, L. Tyrrell.
Thornton Eildon best players: R. Chapman (1 goal), P. Hilder, D. King.
Powelltown 22.16 (148) d Kinglake 10.6 (66)
POWELLTOWN started this game on fire as they booted nine opening quarter goals to just one and it looked as though Kinglake was in for a very long day.
The second quarter was more of the same with Powelly slamming on another seven goals and holding Kinglake scorelees.
At half time, Powelly’s lead was a massive 97 points.
Whatever was said to the Kinglake boys at half time must have worked as they came out in the third with a determination that was exceptional; they actually outplayed Powelly for the quarter and got rewarded with a seven goal-to-four quarter and reduced the hefty margin.
The last quarter was just a bit of an arm wrestle, with both sides snagging two goals.
Powelly would have been rapt with their first half, but not so much their second while Kinglake will take a lot of heart out of their second-half performance, leaving both teams with plenty to work on.
Powelltown best players: L. Miller (6 goals), R. Sandy (1 goal), M. Matheson (1 goal).
Kinglake best players: D. McMahon, J. Butterworth (3 goals), B. Brown.
Seville 6.14 (50) d Yarra Junction 3.8 (26)
THIS game didn’t reach any great heights as a spectacle as it was played in tough heavy conditions.
Goals were extremely hard to come by, but it was Junction that had their noses just in front at half time with a narrow four-point lead and a bit of an upset looked on the cards.
Seville’s third quarter was actually pretty good even though they only scored 2.4 for the term, they did hold Junction to two behinds which saw them take a 10-point lead into the last break.
The last quarter was a carbon copy of the third, with Seville yet again scoring 2.4 to Junction’s two points to come away with a four-goal win which in actuality could have been more considering the amount of ball they had in the second half.
Seville best players: S. Wilson (1 goal), N. O’Keefe (1 goal), A. Mammoliti.
Yarra Junction best players: T. Cordwell, D. Amrein, M. Brown.
Yarra Glen 20.12 (132) d Yea 8.10 (58)
YARRA Glen got back on the winners’ list with a solid performance beating Yea by 74 points.
Yea gave Yarra Glen a little fright early as they led by eight points at quarter time and it did look like game on, but that was short lived as Yarra Glen’s second term was all class.
They played a very direct no-nonsense brand of football which saw them boot 8.1 for the quarter while Yea could only manage the one goal.
At half time, it was Yarra Glen by 34 points.
The third quarter was a battle for both sides as conditions turned heavy.
The quarter yielded 3.2 for both teams and the half time margin remained the same at the last break.
Yarra Glen dominated the last term as they won the ball at will, booting 6.7 for the term and holding Yea to just two behinds to win with a very classy display.
Yarra Glen best players: D. Watt, R. Bateman, L. Hoffman (1 goal).
Yea best players: S. Tull, D. Evans, M. Berry (3 goals).

Under 18s
Emerald 13.13 (91) d Warburton Millgrove 6.1 (37)
EMERALD were hot favourites to win this game which they eventually did, but not before Warby took it right up to them in the first half.
Warby actually held a seven-point lead at half time after some really encouraging play and making the most of their opportunities while Emerald was a little sloppy around goals.
The second half saw Emerald kick into gear as they started sharing the ball around a lot more and playing a more team-orientated brand of football.
Emerald booted 10 second half goals to just one to finish the day with a sizeable win.
Emerald best players: J. Breakwell (3 goals), N. Triandafillou, J. Vallas (1 goal).
Warburton Millgrove best players: D. Bedggood, J. Ward, T. Jones (1 goal).
Healesville 13.15 (93) d Monbulk 4.3 (27)
EVEN though Healesville wasn’t at their brilliant best, they were still damn good with a big win over Monbulk.
Healesville denied Monbulk any score in the second and third quarter which was a sensational effort as a defensive unit.
By three quarter time, Healesville led by 64 points and it was just a matter of how far they could stretch that lead in the last.
To Monbulk’s credit, they did fight out the last quarter with both sides scoring two goals, but it was simply Healesville that was just far too good on the day.
Healesville best players: J. Savage (4 goals), B. Coon, J. McLeod (4 goals).
Monbulk best players: T. Pauw, T. Gromer, A. Skordilis (1 goal).
Belgrave 28.13 (181) d Powelltown 1.1 (7)
BELGRAVE scored a huge win over a depleted Powelltown in a game that was over by quarter time.
Belgrave booted 10 first quarter goals to just one in an excellent display and backed that up with another nine in the second and third quarters while Powelltown didn’t score.
At the last break Belgrave held a 170-point lead.
The last quarter was really a non event with Powelly defending hard with numbers down back to deny Belgrave scoring, the plan did work as Belgrave only booted four behinds for the term but unfortunately for Powelltown, they didn’t score at all.
Belgrave best players: J. Bartils (3 goals), L. Murphy (7 goals), M. Donald (2 goals).
Powelltown best players: B. Nightingale, M. Mallick (1 goal), T. Nightingale.
Olinda Ferny Creek 18.12 (120) d Seville 1.5 (11)
IT WAS good to see Seville get a side on the field as they had to forfeit the weekend before, but it wasn’t the result they were looking for as Olinda played a good consistent four-quarter game full of run that Seville just couldn’t put a halt to.
Olinda shot to a 37-point lead at the first change and their lead just kept growing as the day went on, by three-quarter time, Olinda held a 90-point lead.
The last term was a bit of a slog, but Olinda still managed three majors to Seville’s two behinds to win in excess of 100 points. Olinda Ferny Creek best players: J. Prato, H. Taylor, B. Jones.
Seville best players: J. Hardie, J. Wathen, J. Chapman.
Woori Yallock 7.13 (55) d Mount Evelyn 5.9 (39)
WOORI Yallock did lead at every change in this game, but they never looked in control as Mount Evelyn kept coming at them.
The first half was played more on Woori’s terms and at the long break they led by three goals.
The third term saw Mount Evelyn mount a comeback, booting two goals while Woori could only manage three behinds and it was Woori by just one goal at the last change.
The last quarter Woori had more of the ball, but was astray in front of goals, booting 3.6, however that was more than enough as Mount Evelyn booted 2.2 which gave Woori a hard-fought, 16-point win.
Woori Yallock best players: D. Benson, J. Dewhurst, B. Arnold (4 goals).
Mount Evelyn best players: C. Blake, L. Gallop, J. Fraser.
Yea 7.12 (54) d Wandin 1.9 (15)
THIS game was a real hard slog and goals were very hard to come by, but more so for Wandin than Yea.
Yea was a lot more efficient with footy in hand and got out to a very handy four-goal lead at half time.
The third term saw both teams get plenty of the footy, but it was Yea again that was just cleaner and despite both teams having four scoring shots apiece, it was Yea with 2.2 that stretched their lead as Wandin booted four behinds.
The last term was a scrap with no goals scored, but that didn’t worry Yea as they walked off with a handy win.
Yea best players: X. O’Dwyer, A. Buchanan (1 goal), Z. Pell (3 goals).
Wandin best players: L. Voges, L. Jones, T. Leech-Hines.
Upwey Tecoma: Bye
