HEALESVILLE residents are being asked to watch a film and raise money for charity, with a screening of Mary Meets Mohammad at the Memo Hall on Wednesday.
Healesville Country Women’s Association (CWA) have organised the screening, which will take place at 7.30pm on Wednesday 9 April, which will raise money for Lentara UnitingCare – a division of the Uniting Church.
Mary Meets Mohammad is a documentary that follows the opening of Tasmania’s first detention centre, from the perspective of local Christian woman and knitter, Mary, and Muslim Afghan Hazara asylum seeker, Mohammad.
Mary is strongly opposed to the asylum-seekers’ arrival in the community, but as her knitting club creates beanies for the detention centre’s residents, she becomes curious about the life of the detainees and visits the centre.
CWA member Fay van Duin said the movie discussed the currently divisive issues of asylum seekers and detention centres, showing multiple sides to the story.
“We thought it was something that needed to be shown,” she said.
“We all have our own opinions on asylum-seekers – this shows the humanitarian side of what it’s all about and two sides of the story.”
A light supper will be held after the movie finishes, and all profits from the evening will go to Lentara Uniting Care.
Ms van Duin said the CWA were selling tickets to the evening, and urged potential viewers to book in advance for the film, though tickets will be available on the night.
Tickets to see Mary Meets Mohammad are $10 and the film will be shown at Healesville’s Memo Hall on Wednesday 9 April.
