A MAN who disappeared from Healesville could have his case closed after five years, following new inquiries by police and a hearing from the Coroner.
Beaumaris man Warren Meyer, 57, disappeared while bushwalking around Dom Dom Saddle near the Black Spur on 23 March, Easter Sunday, 2008, at 7.30am.
Despite having food, water, a phone and GPS, Mr Meyer disappeared without a trace and numerous searches, including more than 100 police members, SES crews, local volunteers and the canine unit, produced no results.
A directions hearing was held at the Coroner’s Court on 2 July this year, with an inquest date set for around September, after police had compiled a brief of evidence.
However, a representative from the Coroner’s Court said that an internal update on 8 November said the review of evidence was still being undertaken by Victoria Police.
The representative said that the material would all be presented to the Coroner, who would consider the future of the Mr Meyer’s missing person’s case.
The Coroner could either make a final finding based upon the evidence, deciding that, on a balance of probabilities, Mr Meyer can be presumed to be deceased, or he could launch an inquest.
The representative for the Coroner’s Court said investigations would be regarding phone and bank record checks, potential sightings and evidence initially given in the case.
A date has not been set for the next hearing on the matter.
Mr Meyer’s family have offered a permanent $100,000 reward for any information that leads to the recovery of his remains.
The Mail reported in July on the direction hearing and said the case of Mr Meyer would be re-opened. However, Mr Meyer’s missing person’s case has never been closed.
The Mail apologises for the mistake, and any inconvenience it may have caused.
