Shelve this idea say vandals

By JESSE GRAHAM

THE Yarra Junction community has reacted angrily to rumours that their library will be relocated, with windows marked with graffiti criticising the idea.
The green and purple graffiti stating “Library stays here”, “Leave library here” and “Back off our library”, appeared recently, with concerned residents contacting The Mail on Monday 14 October.
Last week, that the Yarra Ranges Council responded to rumours and denied any proposal to close down the library.
However, Yarra Ranges Mayor and ward councillor Jim Child said a move could happen if deemed appropriate.
Mr Child said the council would be assessing the old shire office precinct, which includes the Upper Yarra Family Centre, link offices and the library on how the space can be best utilised.
He said that any proposal to move services would not result in a loss of books or IT access and that the community would be consulted should any such proposal come up.
Rosemary Crowley from the Upper Yarra Family History Group uses the library at least three times a week and said she, personally, would not want to see the library’s services moved.
“This building was purpose built for a library – I don’t think there’s a need to move it,” she said.
For more information about the library’s future, call Yarra Ranges Council on 1300 368 333.
