FARMERS and service providers came out to Yarra Glen last week to learn about hay and silage, with an expert presentation at TarraWarra Abbey.
Top Fodder expert Natalie Nelson from the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) gave a presentation to around 50 people about preparation for successful silage on Wednesday 21 August.
Ms Nelson said she was glad to see the turnout on the day and that silage was an important issue for beef and dairy industry members, from farmers to service providers.
“If they can come away with one thing, my job has been done,” she said.
Hoogies Yarra Glen helped to organise the event and agronomist with Hoogies Rose Beyer said preparation for silage now would impact the food farmers had to feed their cattle in the next winter.
Ms Beyer said that one example of silage was grass that had been wrapped tightly in bales – it ferments and could be kept for long periods of time to feed cattle and farm animals.
She said another event would be held later in the year for farmers and industry members, on a different topic.
